Nail fungus is not only unsightly but can mean the loss of self esteem for some. For many, this is a cosmetic challenge that sometimes is difficult to eliminate. Millions of people are attacked by this annualy and the numbers keep growing in staggering rates. So let's start with an explanation of what nail fungus is.

This type of infection is more common in the nail bed of the toes which usually starts either on the big or little toe. This particular fungus is also known as Onychomycosis. When the first signs of nail fungus are discovered, it is usually in the form beginning with a yellow or white spot beneath the bed of the nail. Soon thereafter if not treated in a timely fashion, the entire nail will soon begin to turn yellow.

When the nail turns entirely yellow or brown in some cases, the nail will start to become thick and brittle. Soon the nail will then start to become crumbly around the edges. This for many can make it difficult to wear shoes or sandals that expose their feet. Our nails have effective barriers that do not allow foreign objects to invade. But once penetrated it is a difficult process to reverse.

When battling nail fungus, nail polish or any stick on nails should not be worn. This will hold the moisture and fungi in the nail and actually help in the growth of the fungi. Fungus tends to live in dark, damp and wet environments. By only applying medication to the infected area will help the process for curing this infection.

Wearing shoes that are tight and have bad ventilation are the largest culprit when it comes to this. What better place for fungi to grow than inside a dark and warm shoe. This can also make it difficult to cure because most of us need to wear shoes because of our occupations or sport.

If at all possible it is best advised to go barefoot with a protective barrier such as a sandal if anytime possible. This will allow the nail to be in sun light and stay dry from sweat and moisture. If this can be achieved then continuing with steady doses of medication will soon break down the fungus and results will soon be seen.

Another thing to keep in mind is that nail fungus is contagious. These organisms live in moist locations such as shower stalls, pool areas and locker rooms where most people are often barefoot. Knowing the locations that these organisms live in can greatly reduce or limit your chances of catching any infection.

When treating nail fungus there are topical treatments that can be obtained over the counter. But if a severe case of infection exists, then it might be up to your doctor to give you a prescription that is much higher in medication and is taken orally. Sometimes these medications have been known to have side effects in certain cases.

In the battle against nail fungus it is advised to start with the basics. Such as trying to find the source of the infection and eliminate that if allowable. Or wear socks and shoes that have more ventilation than the ones you wear know. Just these simple steps will not cure you of nail fungus, but will help decrease you and your family's chances of obtaining this infection.
